Wait, WHAT??

Have you ever caught yourself belting out a catchy song and then gone, WAIT, what!!??

Music is powerful. It makes us feel. It makes us move. It can instill a passion in us that may or may not be just or appropriate.

While the lyrics of “Baby Got Back” are far from appropriate it seems to occur time and time again in Children’s movies and shows.  Shrek, Shark Tale, Scooby Doo 2, Yogi Bear are just a few that have featured the song or parts of the song.  While children, thank goodness, view the song with innocent eyes and giggly sing alongs, I would be upset if my child was singing the WHOLE song.

In saying all this, I contradict myself as when my then boyfriend (now husband of 11 years) told me that this was his favorite song I decided then and there that he was the man for me.  Music moves us.  This somehow let me be comfortable being me with my husband.  He loves me the way I am – big butt and all. Everytime we hear it we look at each other with a twinkle in our eyes as we had a connection that some might not understand. Music moves us.

I also remember when we were dating, belting out “Big Yellow Taxi” as we were driving one day.  It came to the part “Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you got ’til it’s gone” – well apparently I was a little too enthusiastic here as hubby to be looked at me sharply, “What do you mean by THAT?” Haha, music moves us.

So as I come to close this post I don’t really know what my conclusion is other than be aware of what you are listening to and singing along with.  Doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it or even listen to it anymore but be aware.  Especially around your children.  I remember my son belting out Britney Spears’ “Womanizer” at the top of his lungs in the car one day.  “Mom, that’s such a cool song.” He liked it because he could remember the lyrics…  Needless to say poor Britney didn’t get played in the car as much from then on.
