Music Moves Us

“I like big butts and I cannot lie..”

Wait, WHAT??

Have you ever caught yourself belting out a catchy song and then gone, WAIT, what!!??

Music is powerful. It makes us feel. It makes us move. It can instill a passion in us that may or may not be just or appropriate.

While the lyrics of “Baby Got Back” are far from appropriate it seems to occur time and time again in Children’s movies and shows.  Shrek, Shark Tale, Scooby Doo 2, Yogi Bear are just a few that have featured the song or parts of the song.  While children, thank goodness, view the song with innocent eyes and giggly sing alongs, I would be upset if my child was singing the WHOLE song.

In saying all this, I contradict myself as when my then boyfriend (now husband of 11 years) told me that this was his favorite song I decided then and there that he was the man for me.  Music moves us.  This somehow let me be comfortable being me with my husband.  He loves me the way I am – big butt and all. Everytime we hear it we look at each other with a twinkle in our eyes as we had a connection that some might not understand. Music moves us.

I also remember when we were dating, belting out “Big Yellow Taxi” as we were driving one day.  It came to the part “Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you got ’til it’s gone” – well apparently I was a little too enthusiastic here as hubby to be looked at me sharply, “What do you mean by THAT?” Haha, music moves us.

So as I come to close this post I don’t really know what my conclusion is other than be aware of what you are listening to and singing along with.  Doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it or even listen to it anymore but be aware.  Especially around your children.  I remember my son belting out Britney Spears’ “Womanizer” at the top of his lungs in the car one day.  “Mom, that’s such a cool song.” He liked it because he could remember the lyrics…  Needless to say poor Britney didn’t get played in the car as much from then on.

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Proverbs 4:23

  3. Hahaha! Loved this post … and yes, it is so true!! I find it so annoying when the music is so catchy and you know you’ll love the song UNTIL the lyrics start and turn out to be rubbish!

  4. It certainly does. Some songs bring such powerful memories and the emotions felt at the time with them. This can be a good or a bad thing. I tend to play the good things 😉

    1. Oh I get that. Definitely choose the good over the bad. I love that music can be a memory boost. Kind of like a good smell in the kitchen can take you back to your grandmother’s house. Blessings to you. x

  5. There was a song by Hall and Oates called “ManEater” years ago. My daughter and I were singing along to it in the car, when my son got really disturbed and wanted to know what it all meant. Fun memory. Thanks. ☺

  6. Lovely fun post. With my two-year-old grandchild, I listen to a lot of music. The stuff that gets stuck in my head can drive me crazy – a whole day of singing the Muppets’ Ma-na-ma-nah or Frozen’s “Let it Go.” 🙂 All fun, but yeesh.

    1. Music is so great for kids. Gets them moving, encourages them to sing… we love to crank it up and dance around the house together. Haha I’m going to have Ma-na-ma-nah stuck in my head now. Those are both favorites in our house.

I also remember baby got back from the series FRIENDS >_<
Can't help it sometimes…i don't even know the lyrics to most of these "ear-worm" songs, yet I find myself mumbling the few verses I do know from time to time.

The funniest (or worst) is having kids singing lyrics and then you realize how…um…”inappropriate” the song is for them…but they like the catchy beat!😊

    1. Exactly what happened with “Womanizer.” Thought I loved it until my 5 year old son was belting it out. Haha oops!!

I was just telling a co-worker yesterday that it was music that brought my husband and I together. First dates were concerts and now, 30 some years later, we buy each other gifts of experience–usually music-related. He surprised me last night with a used 12-string which I had recently passed on because the practical, sensible me didn’t see the need for two guitars even though I’ve “lusted” after a 12-string since college days my former roommate reminded me earlier.
I love your post, especially the part about twinkle-inducing songs.
I still get all “twitterpated” when I hear Billy Ocean’s Caribbean Queen or any Don Williams song – the music of young love – keeping the spark alive.

  11. I love hearing my nieces and nephews singing along to songs – although once or twice I have heard some lyrics that were definitely above their age level (thankfully – I am pretty sure they had no idea what they were singing, like you son!).

As for me, I would never, ever have been caught belting out a song while driving. So long as you definition of “never, ever” only goes back a couple days.

I like the beat best. The lyrics to some songs not so much. Thankfully, my generation sung songs without the filth, at least most did. I listen to the latter, usually uplifting and positive music strikes a cord with me. When all else fails…go instrumental.
